The Rose Master

The Rose Master - Valentina Cano

*Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.*

Anne is a housemaid who is forced to take a new job at Rosewood Manor. Once there, she notices that all is not as it should be. Only three other people work at Rosewood, they are all mysteriously bruised and scratched and something is scratching at her door at night. The master, Lord Grey, is battling a supernatural evil, one that is now targeting Anne and means to end them both.

This was an okay read, I think the author was going for a gothic feel but there was no tension in the story telling. Any build up of Anne's first couple of days at Rosewood Manor was ruined by two characters telling her everything about the supernatural elements, there was no mystery to it and the big reveal wasn't a surprise.

I also found the language and tone a bit off, it felt too modern at times and pulled me out of the story to question whether someone from that period (victorian or earlier?) would say that. I also found the speech flowery and there were too many boring scenes where Ann is cleaning.

I didn't hate it but it's just an average story that could have been a lot more.
There's another book in the series but based on this I'll be giving it a miss.

24 Festive Tasks: Door 3 Melbourne Cup Day

hosted by Murder by Death, Themis-Athena, and Moonlight Snow

Task 1: Pick your ponies!  MbD has posted the horses scheduled to race; everyone picks the three they think will finish (in any order).

Cross Counter - 1 point + 1 point for participation ( I think, correct me in the comments if I'm wrong on this).

Task 2:  Cup day is all about the hats.  Post a picture of your favorite hat, whether it’s one you own or not.

Not a lover of hats, any hat I wear would be a woolly hat, bucket or baseball cap.

Here are out there hat creations I found online.

Task 3: The coloring of the “horse of a different color” in the movie version of The Wizard of Oz was created by rubbing the horse’s fur with jello. What’s the weirdest use of jello you’ve ever come across?

I found a recipe for making your own lip gloss using Jello. I haven't tried it but I'd never think of using it for this.

10 Alternative Uses for Jello

Task 4: Have you ever been to or participated in a competition involving horses (racing, jumping, dressage, whatever)? Tell us about it. Photos welcome, too!

As a youngster I competed in pony club competitions, I gave it up when went to nursing college but my sister still has horses and regularly competes in dressage and show jumping.

Here I am at 14 years old on my pony Sunni doing cross country at Bruckley Castle.

Book: about horses or a horse on the cover.  Books with roses on the cover or about gardening; anything set in Australia.

24 Festive Tasks: Door 4 Diwali

hosted by Murder by Death, Themis-Athena, and Moonlight Madness

Task 1:  Share a picture of your favorite light display.

I love it when there's thunder and lightning, there's something comforting being all cosy inside whilst there's thunderstorms outside.

Task 2:  Cleaning is a big part of this holiday; choose one of your shelves, real or virtual, and tidy / organise it.  Give us the before and after photos.  OR Tidy up 5 of the books on your BookLikes shelves by adding the CORRECT cover, and/or any other missing information. (If in doubt, see here: http://jenn.booklikes.com/post/1782687/state-of-the-database-booklikes-database-halloween-bingo-and-a-mini-rant-with-pictures).

Before

After

I’m not convinced it’s any better but I’ll go with it for just now.

Task 3: Eating sweets is also a big part of Diwali. Either select a recipe for a traditional sweet, or make a family favorite and share a picture with us.

Peanut butter truffles

200g milk chocolate

100ml double cream

3 tablespoons crunchy peanut butter

Salted peanuts (crushed)

Slowly melt chocolate and cream over a low heat.

When melted, take off the heat and add the peanut butter until thoroughly mixed.

Put mixture into a plastic container and put into freezer for 30-60 mins.

Remove from container and cut into squares.

Coat truffles in crushed peanuts.

Done!!

Task 4: During Diwali, people pray to the goddess Lakhshmi, who is typically depicted as a beautiful young woman holding a lotus flower. Find 5 books on your shelves (either physical or virtual) whose covers show a young woman holding a flower and share their cover images.

Whilst I browsed through my book titles such as Genital Grinder and Hellspawn, it dawned on me that I don't have many covers depicting ladies with flowers. Still, I just managed to scrape these 5.

Book: Read a book with candles on the cover or the word “candle” or “light” in the title; OR a book that is the latest in a series; OR set in India; OR any non-fiction book that is ‘illuminating’ (Diwali is Sanskrit for light/knowledge and row, line or series)kk

Even White Trash Zombies Get the Blues!

Even White Trash Zombies Get the Blues - Diana Rowland

The second book in the white trash zombie series sees Angel being falsely implicated in the theft of an unusual body from the morgue. With her job on the line she investigates who could be behind the theft and comes across a disturbing organisation that ties in with the zombie mafia.

This was almost as good as the first book, there's not much difference in my rating for 1 & 2 just a feeling that I liked the first book slightly more. That being said this was all out fun, a little slow to start off with but there's a lot going on and it was a fast read once I got into it.

The biggest reason I am loving this series is Angel, she's such a great character. She undergoes quite a bit of character growth in this second book, starting to better and believe in herself more and it was heartening to see her move forward in her relationships with others, especially her father. She is a very relatable and overall likeable character, in no way perfect and better for it.

A fun read that has me itching to get the next one started. Highly recommended.

24 Festive Tasks: Door 2 Guy Fawkes Night

Task 1:  Burn a book in effigy.  Not that anyone of us would do such a thing, but if you HAD to, which book would be the one you’d sacrifice to the flames (gleefully or not)?

So boring, it felt like the same story just repeated multiple times. The only book I've ever DNF'd.

Task 2:  List your top 3 treasonous crimes against books.  Not ones you’ve committed, but the ones you think are the worst.

1. Banning or censoring. A big no no for me. Here is a list of the 50 most challenged books - https://www.bannedbooksweek.org.uk/banned-books/50-banned-books/

2. Not returning books. If someone has been nice enough to loan you a treasured book, you read it as soon as and then return it. To do otherwise is a dick move.

3. Defacing books, do it in your own books not in library books. Just selfish.

Task 3:  Share your favorite / most memorable BBQ recollections or recipe, or your favorite recipe for food “flambé” (i.e., doused with alcohol which is then set aflame and allowed to burn off).

Pass, I'm not a BBQ or flambe person.

Task 4:  Find 5 uses of the word “gunpowder” in book titles in contexts other than for blowing up things or shooting people (e.g., Gunpowder Green by Laura Childs = tea).

Gunpowder Moon - David Pedreira (moon exploration)

Gunpowder Alchemy - Jeannie Lin (fiction - engineering??)

Gunpowder Soup - Karl Wiggins (humour)

Gunpowder Alley - John Rowland (Fiction - thriller)

Gunpowder Witch - Jordan Williams (Alternative Salem witch trials).

Book:  Set in the UK, or a political thriller; a book involving any monarchy or revolution; books about arson or related to burning.

That should be 4 points for me, not sure of my total at the moment. I'm doing a bit of catch up just now so will post another update soon with points.

Mockingjay

Mockingjay (The Final Book of The Hunger Games) - Suzanne Collins

The 3rd and last instalment to the series sees Katniss in District 13. She is the 'Mockingjay' a symbol of the rebellion against the Capital. A group of rebel soldiers including Gale and a severely traumatised Peeta are with Katniss for a PR promo when they get pulled into the Capital and a new 'arena'.
A very fast read that I enjoyed a lot but left me thinking that Katniss is a deeply unlikeable person on so many levels. I got a little fed up of her always wanting to be the martyr, imagining that everything happened because of her or her actions, completely forgetting that people have their own agency.
That being said I still enjoyed this a lot but less so than the other books.

Where have I been and what have I done?

First of all, hello to all my BL buddies. I know I’ve barely been on the site this year but I have missed you all.

As some of you know I made the decision to move back to Scotland after living in Australia for 15 years. Last year ended up being incredibly stressful and I wasn’t sorry to leave and come back home with my 2 fur babies.

December 2017

It was great spending Xmas with my family and not worrying that I’d have to leave them and fly off to the other side of the world. The fur babies Tabitha and Suzy were comfortable but cramped in my bedroom but doing well after their long flight.

Jan/Feb/Mar

Once the festive season was over it was time to sort out:

*nursing registration

*get a job

*buy a car (was going stir crazy without wheels)

*find a house to buy

The nursing registration was a fiasco and didn’t get sorted until nearly April. I started having a look for jobs but without my registration I wasn’t going to get very far and to be honest it was nice taking some time off work to get settled.

I found a house I loved even though there were problems with the exiting owners, I am really happy with what I bought and hope to be here for many years.

April/May/June

Registration finally came through and I got a job as a treatment room nurse in a prison. So different to the type of nursing I’ve done before and whilst I’ve settled in and been working there for 5 months now I’m not sure if this is what I see myself doing long term. One thing I really dislike is the shift hours. I end up feeling too knackered to do anything, The whole point of me coming back to Scotland was so that I could be with my family more and reduce my work hours and have a better life/work balance. All I can say to that is that its not happening, next year I'll have to relook at what I want to do and make some changes.

Being back, however, has been a lot more difficult than I imagined. I remember my australian friend telling me that I needed to be prepared for things not being the same when I returned to Scotland. I brushed off her comment saying yeah, yeah, of course things will be different, it’s 15 years after all. I found that so many things had changed and it was different being back for good then just coming home for a few weeks before going back to Oz. It's only hitting me now how much I've missed out on, friends and family whose lives have changed in so many ways and I've missed it all. It's hard to completely regret the time I had overseas but I'm sad at what might have been if I'd come back sooner.

July/August/September/October

Work wise it's just been the same old, I'm still trying to sort my pay out as even with 26 years experience I'm being paid as a newly qualified nurse. Bloody NHS!!!

A sad day for me in August, on the 16th my beautiful fur baby Tabitha passed away unexpectedly, she was only 10 years old. I'd had her since she was a kitten, she was always the little adventurer and once she got used to her new surroundings she loved being out in the country so I think her last few months were happy and contented.

It felt too weird having just Suzy and myself in the house so I decided to get another cat. After much searching I got a 9 week old Calico kitten. Her name is Boo and she is very playful and full of mischief and can't seem to leave Suzy alone for more than a few minutes.

Here she is at 10 weeks.

and here she is at 18 weeks

That pretty much brings me to now, I've just been off sick for a week with laryngitis and flu and whilst off I was contacted by a previous work colleague who told me that a friend  in Australia had passed away. I'm gutted, this person was a good friend to me, I worked with her closely when we were managers in the same centre and we supported each other through all the crazy hospital politics.

She talked about coming out to visit me in Scotland but I hadn't been able to get in touch with her over recent months. It turns out that she was having mental health issues and most likely committed suicide. My heart breaks that she felt that this was the only option for her. I'm sad for her, her partner and family, her many friends and colleagues who loved her and selfishly I'm sad that I will never again hear her voice or see her smile.

November/December

It's November now and I guess I'm just gearing up for the end of the year and Christmas in my new home. Most likely I'll have to work but a first Christmas in a new home is still exciting. Next year will be an evaluation of what I want to change but for now I'm going to plod along and get through the next 2 months.

A year of not many highs and far too many lows.

It feels good to be back on BL, I"m not sure why I stayed away so long but the site appears to be less glitchy. Whilst I missed the Halloween bingo I'm going to try and participate properly in the Festive bingo.

Catch you all soon.

Year’s Best Hardcore Horror Vol 1

Year's Best Hardcore Horror Volume 1 - Randy Chandler, Cheryl Mullenax

I listened to the audio of this book and thought that Joe Hempel was a fantastic narrator. I did find a few editing mistakes and not all the stories were for me, for that I knocked off half a star. On the whole this was a very good collection.

The stories in order were:

"Worth the having" by Michael Paul Gonzalez - A somewhat stomach churning look at what happens when you get everything you wish for and the price you have to pay. This one had me cringing at the details in some parts, a great start to the collection.
"Awakening" by Jeff Strand - Hilarious story where a psychopath realises he's a serial killer. I love strand's style and this one didn't disappoint.
"Readings off the charts" by Adam Cesare - Paranormal investigators rope in an unsuspecting amateur as they try and collect data. This was a bit predictable and I realised what the ending would be about half way through. This didn't spoil my enjoyment of it.
"Reborn" by The Behrg - A story of why churches no longer take in abandoned babies. This one was pretty brutal and had the added bonus of making you question the narrator.
"What's worst" by David James Keaton - Jason sees a dead baby on the road and decides to take it for a drive in his car. Very trippy read that has you seriously questioning the moral compass of the narrator. It didn't do much for me except make me angry. This story will seriously test some readers boundaries.
"Dead end" by Kristopher Triana - A serial killer notes something very familiar with the hitchhiker he picks up. A nice twist in the end with this story.
"What you wish for" by Lillith Morgan - Two people live out their fantasies, consequence free. Only one of them hasn't bargained on being attracted to a fledgling killer. Some romance and sex mixed in with the gore for this story, I enjoyed the writing but thought it could have been edited better to condense the story a bit more.
"King Shits" by Charles Austin Muir - A trucker dishes out brutal justice to bullies. Very violent and highly enjoyable.
"Cleanup On Aisle 3" by Adam Howe - What should have been a quick robbery turns into a cat and mouse game as the storekeeper turns the tables. Great story with a satisfying ending, it was also a lot more emotional than I was expecting.
"Bath Salt Fetus" by George Palacious - Maria is pregnant and wants to get rid of her baby, to do this she tries a new drug which has interesting side effects. Wrong, just very, very wrong.
"Bored With Brutality" by MP Johnson - Rocker GG Allen decides to live a normal life. This was one of the weaker stories for me and didn't really hold my interest.
"Exposed" by Monica J. O'Rourke - A mother is desperate to find her child and decides to take the law into her own hands. How far will she go to find out the truth. Some eye watering detail in this story which ends with a great twist.
"Eleanor" by Jason Parent - Father Stuart takes in disfigured baby Eleanor after she is abandoned on the steps of the church. As she becomes a teenager their relationship becomes more intense and confusing to them both. A slow burn story with a heartbreaking ending.
"The Scavengers" by Tony Knighton - Brutal story of 2 ivory poachers who will do anything to get a bigger share of the deal. Things do not go to plan. Great story, I love karma.
"The Most Important Miracle" by Scott Emerson - All hail the God of Breakfast. A diner cook turns psychotic and decides to cook a breakfast to remember. Short and not at all sweet but very enjoyable.
"Hungry For Control" by Clare de Lune - A woman who was in a mutually abusive relationship before the zombie plague, sees a chance to get some revenge. I really enjoyed the story even though I thought the MC wasn't very likeable and was just as sexually abusive as her ex.
"Clarissa" by Robert Essig & Jack Bantry - Pregnant Clarissa plots to escape the basement where she's been kept for years under the guard of her rapist. All is not as it seems as her chance arrives. Depressing and disturbing especially when you think of some of the real life equivalents.
"Where The Sun Don't Shine" by Pete Kahle - Gordy wakes up after being on a trip for 4 days but can't remember anything about the trip and is exhibiting strange behaviour. This starts of with Gordy waking up covered in blood, mud and vomit and then alternates between the actual trip and the continuing aftermath. Creature feature that was great fun to read.
"Blackbird Lullaby" by George Cotronis - Romance blossoms in a support group for people whose demons are literally killing them. A nice end to the collection although perhaps a little too short to get much out of it.

Anatomy of Evil

Anatomy of Evil - Brian Pinkerton

*Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.*

A group of vacationers go fishing and decide not to heed the warnings of staying in the well worn tourist spots. It all goes wrong when a freak storm hits after which they start exhibiting strange and disturbing behaviour.

This was fairly slow to begin with but picked up the pace drastically after the halfway mark. I read this in a day which is something I don't do often. I think the author did a great job and it surpassed my low expectations going into the read. Recommended.

Gods and Monsters: Mythbreaker

Mythbreaker (Gods and Monsters Book 2) - Stephen Blackmoore

*Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.*

Fitz has stolen money from his drug dealing boss. Fitz is also what is called a 'Chronicler', someone with the gift of hearing the voices of gods, something he's always put down to hallucinations. He learns that he the only Chronicler left and as such a hot commodity within the 'god' community. He's on the run being aided by the god of the internet in an effort to stop the ultimate bad guy gaining control of him and therefore humanity.

Urban fantasy that was a lot of fun, lots of black humour and the mythology interwoven into the plot was done well, keeping me engaged in the story in moments when the action was lighter.
Recommended.

Halloween Carnival Volume 1

Halloween Carnival Volume 1 - Lisa Morton, Kevin Lucia, John Little, Brian James Freeman, Robert R. McCammon

*Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.*
A new series of Halloween short story collections from old and new authors alike. When I saw Robert McCammons name in the writer list, I knew I wouldn't be disappointed. 'Strange Candy' is a stellar effort and manages to be both touching and a little creepy at the same time.
My favourite story was 'The Rage of Achilles', I haven't read Kevin Lucia before but was very impressed with his writing style. A grief stricken father attends the church of Father Ward to confess a crime he has not yet committed and tells of how he lost his family. This story was truly heart wrenching and really pulled you in emotionally. The stand out of the collection.
'Demon Air' was disappointing, it seemed like it was going to be a gory fun read but it fizzled out halfway through. Having heard such great things about the author I'm surprised at the quality of the story.
The next story was a nice enough read but incredibly cliched, 'La Hacienda de los Muertos'. Trick is an old tv star who is offered a role in Mexican horror movie. When he gets there he finds that some of the horror is true. I thought this was okay but everything gets solved a little too easily and quickly.
The last one of the collection was '#MakeHalloweenScaryAgain', a local author tries to use social media to revive Halloween and use it for self promotion, instead it sees a serial killer come out of the woodwork and take the hashtag literally. I quite enjoyed this one, not as much as the first two but I thought it was fun even though it was a little predictable.
Overall, I really enjoyed the collection, the first two stories make it worth while picking up this collection.

Halloween Bingo Update #5
